During World War II, American GIs pinned up photos of Rita Hayworth and Betty Grable, but June Allyson was the girl they wanted to come home to. Petite and blonde with fresh-faced optimism, she had the image of an ideal sweetheart and wife.

my dad said that. and he didn't even go.
I guess I was too young to appreciate "fresh-faced optimism" in the 40s, myself.
and thanks for the Wikipedia link, btw. I was just about to go looking for something like that myself when I realized I was nearly late for a meeting and buzzed out of here, thence (after the meeting) to Burlington to spend part of the afternoon with Phil, who was waiting for a turnaround to Cinci this evening. lucky he wasn't stuck at Logan, which was a very difficult place to get in to or out of today except by air, I understand.
i've never been much for fresh-faced, myself. but dad said every boy woke up in the morning with June on his mind. cracked up a boyfriend i had at the time, the image of it.
