Another U.S. diplomatic coup

Russia said to send more warplanes to Syria, diplomacy 'on life support' | Reuters

"The United States made clear on Friday that it would not, at least for now, carry through on the threat it made on Wednesday to halt the diplomacy if Russia did not take immediate steps to halt the violence."

Democrats Rake In Money, Thanks to Suit by Republicans - The New York Times

"Democrats denounced it as an assault on democracy and a sop to billionaires when the Supreme Court issued a ruling two years ago that loosened limits on campaign giving.

"But Hillary Clinton and Democratic Party leaders are now exploiting the decision, funneling tens of millions of dollars from their wealthiest donors into a handful of presidential swing states.

"The flow of money, documented in Federal Election Commission reports, shows Democrats expanding their fund-raising advantage in the final phase of the presidential race, defying expectations at the beginning of the campaign that Republicans would dominate the money chase. Mrs. Clinton and the Democrats are now outpacing Mr. Trump and the Republicans on every front, according to F.E.C. records: Mrs. Clinton’s campaign, her party and outside groups supporting her have raised almost twice as much as Mr. Trump and his allies."

IRS to eliminate more than 7,000 jobs as fewer people file paper tax returns
The Washington Post

"We had people in the hallways crying," said a union rep in Covington, Ky. -- home to a facility that processes paper returns.…

The IRS statement offered statistics sobering to anyone who makes their living processing paper tax returns. The majority of taxpayers file electronically: e-filing rose from 58 percent in 2008 to 86 percent in 2015, the statement said.

In addition, the IRS budget has shrunk $900 million since 2010, and the agency lost 17,000 jobs in that same period.

But wait…

Now the Bears can't even show up ready to play - Chicago Tribune

The Cowboys held the ball for almost 22 of the 30 minutes in the first half. They gained 274 yards -- yes, 274 yards in the first half, people. They picked up 19 first downs. They rushed for 135 yards, many of them up the middle where Eddie Goldman used to be and where Will Sutton should never be again.

Is there no escape?

The debate will be broadcast live on major TV networks, including ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC. It will also be shown on C-SPAN, CNN, Fox News and MSNBC.

ABC News and Facebook are partnering to broadcast the debate, as well as commentary before and after, live on the social media platform.

Other livestreams of the debate will be available on ABC News, Buzzfeed News, CBS News, CNN, C-SPAN, The Daily Caller, Fox News, Hulu, Huffington Post, NBC, PBS, Politico, Telemundo, The Wall Street Journal, Twitter, Univision, Yahoo and YouTube.

Nope. None. It really will be bigger than the Super Bowl. At least, there'll be more ways to watch it. I'm just guessing C-SPAN will have the most boring production, so that's the one I'll watch. I am watching with the sound off – I mean it – and C-SPAN seems as good a place as any to do that.

The LI, I mean. (Are they called digits? Places? Just plain old letters?) Whatever—at least it's better than XXVVIVCXXVI, which is positively indecipherable. Sure, I don't know what LI means either, but at least it saves ink.

Wait, ink?

Maybe next year we should call it LI.2 and be done with it.
