A government of his own

How Trump Hollowed Out US National Security | WIRED

Across the government, nearly 100,000 federal law enforcement agents, officers, and personnel are working today without permanent agency leaders, from Customs and Border Protection and Immigrations and Customs Enforcement to the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

Kids around here get snow days (but not many this year)

Virus days, however, are something new. (The Coronavirus is still way, way less dangerous in the U.S. than the plain old flu; if you haven't had your flu shot yet this season, go get it now.)

Nonessential personnel were not required to go to work on Friday and most activities would be suspended, including the schools…

Pep

Pep was a mainstay Rotary Club luncheons in small towns all across America, an attribute you might associate with the  Main Street of Sinclair Lewis. It was also the name of a breakfast cereal that tasted like cardboard but came with very cool prizes in each box. But by the end of the 60's both the food and the attitude had gone out of style. Or so I thought.

Then, this morning at the grocery store I made a comment about the weather to the kid behind the checkout counter. "Chilly," I said (it was something around 15º).

"But if you walk with pep in your step you'll hardly feel it," he said.

Still there, and good advice.

In case you've ever wondered…

…what it's like to live in Western Massachusetts, well, here. This is the lead story on the front page of this morning's local paper.

(I only subscribe to the top half of the front page—the part you can see on the newspaper stack at the drug store—so there's no telling what's inside. In fairness, there have been occasional rumors of persons in town who do not support Sanders, and one actual sighting of such a person earlier this month.)
