How would you like to go to sea on the Lord Sandwich?

Controversy erupts over Aussie museum’s identification of HMS Endeavour wreck

The HMS Endeavour is famous for being sailed by Capt. James Cook to the South Pacific for a scientific expedition in the late 18th century. But the Endeavour (by then renamed the Lord Sandwich) met its demise in the Atlantic, when it was one of 13 ships the British deliberately sank (or "scuttled") in a Rhode Island harbor during the American Revolution.

South America's 'lithium fields' reveal the dark side of our electric future

"When we think of extraction, we think of fossil fuels like coal and gas. Unfortunately, lithium also falls under the same umbrella, despite paving the way for an electric future.. Lithium can be described as the non-renewable mineral that makes renewable energy possible - often touted as the next oil."

Thousands of Planes Are Flying Empty and No One Can Stop Them

A pre-pandemic policy on airport usage is pressuring airlines to keep "ghost flights" in the air. The climate impact is massive.

We're in danger of drowning here…

 …in acronyms and initialisms.

We're already aware of the terminally boring POTUS, FLOTUS, AND SCOTUS (I'm always worried about spelling that last one); Just this morning I've noticed SOTU (State of the Union) and HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities).

OMG, will it ever end?

OK, I give up

Snowstorm coming: What we know and don’t know

This isn’t a northern Michigan snowstorm. This isn’t even a central Lower Michigan or Grand Rapids snowstorm.

[Michigan is not the M state I live in — here, they're predicting rain. Which is not necessarily good news.]

Making a Super Bowl Commercial Is Super Stressful This Year

T he average price for 30 seconds of ad time during the gridiron matchup is $6.5 million this year, up from the $5.5 million CBS fetched for last year’s telecast, according to estimates from ad-tracking firm Kantar.
Add in a few truckloads of cash for production and you could be talking about real money here.

I don't believe in "feels like"

My weather app right now insists it "feels like" 9º. But it doesn't. It feels like 20º, and a toasty-warm 20º at that.

"Feels like" is just a random number somebody makes up.

Been paused?

Winter Storm Kenan dumps more than foot of snow in parts of New York City

Most snowfall in the Big Apple was in the 7-10 inch range, such as in Central Park which saw 8.3 inches, according to Accuweather meteorologist Alan Reppert.

…but this much snow in Manhattan is an awesome mess. Because there's no place to put the stuff.

You can't just shovel it up or plow it off.  When I lived there, back (way back) in the day, they laboriously loaded it into trucks and then dumped it in the river. Maybe they've figured out an easier way since them. Still, it can't be easy.

(There is one advantage if you live there: for a little while. traffic drops to just about none.

And in Central Park, of course, you can just let it lie. Then it's…fun.)
