Erskine Childers' "The Riddle of the Sands" is third on the list of best British spy novels that was floating around here not long ago (and free from Project Gutenberg, and now on our official reading list). Written in 1905, "Sands" is a techno-thriller in which the techno part has to do with sailing off the coast of Germany, and then some other stuff but that's a secret. Which is, more or less, why it's a spy novel in the first place.
