Forget that natural selection is a probabilistic statement–not all beneficial mutations are 'chosen', and some deleterious mutations are–the scientific method does not deal with "meaning." Can an evolutionary biologist speak to mechanistic cause? Yes: antibiotic resistant bacteria evolve due to selection of resistant mutants. But is there any meaning in this that is derived from science? No. Whether you think meaning is bestowed by a higher power or is simply invented by people, the scientific method does not address meaning.
