On supplying arms to insurgents

The Pentagon has lost track of about 190,000 AK-47 assault rifles and pistols given to Iraqi security forces in 2004 and 2005, according to a new government report, raising fears that some of those weapons have fallen into the hands of insurgents fighting U.S. forces in Iraq.
Ya think?

Some $2. 8 billion, the GAO says, has been spent on buying and delivering equipment to the Iraqi security forces, not all on assault rifles and pistols, one supposes, but, as the great Ev Dirksen once famously said, a million here, a million there, pretty soon you're talking about real money.

The general in charge of the sloppy US distribution program was, turns out, some guy named Patraeus.
