Like Vegas only backward

I figured it was time to do something about that big bowl of coins on my chest of drawers so I took it to coin counting machine. The machine takes 9 percent; certain persons of my acquaintance would be appalled. It's like Vegas only backward: you put the coins in, the teller gives you money, but hey, it makes that same great sound. And I am easily amused.

Get this: In Vegas, slot machines don't even pay out coins anymore(most of them anyway). But they all play the sound effect of coins dropping while it prints a paper ticket. I think that's so funny! CHING CHING CHING CHING! The holdouts that still pay in US currency don't have coin-sound effects nor do coins actually drop out of the machine. (Employees argue that paper-paying slot machines take jobs.) In those casinos - get this - you can put a dollar into a penny slot machine and then when you decide you've had enough you push a button and wait for someone to come pay you the 63 cents that you have left of your dollar. (I've even been in such a casino where ALL payouts also require an armed guard - for 63 cents!) And for that, the casino pays $10/hour - or whatever. They must be raking in a lot of pennies!

Yeah well the sound is everything. It's like listening to a waterfall of money. But what, paper tickets? That's disgusting. You could have that much fun at a toll booth.

The fun is discovering how it all works. We were in a casino where slot machines wouldn't take money! Whose idea was that? If you sign up for the players club (and give them money) you get a card with a magnetic strip. Only to find that not all the machines take the card! Then, you have to go to a different machine to buy a paper ticket. Then you have to take ticket and card to a cashier to get paid. And, forget about trying to give them pennies! They won't take them at the cashier booth even if that's where you got them from! Maybe I was dreaming because this can't be real!

That's really amazing. Maybe they're figuring you'll just give up and go home and leave your money there. Ya think?

Maybe they were dreaming.
