I got up in the wee hours…

…and just couldn't get back to sleep so I kicked on the computer and found 870,000 old photographs of New York City.

Culled from the Municipal Archives collection of more than 2.2 million images going back to the mid-1800s, the 870,000 photographs feature all manner of city oversight -- from stately ports and bridges to grisly gangland killings.

The entire gallery is available here (see "Enter the Online Gallery" at the bottom of the page) but currently difficult to get to because of high traffic; we will absolutely post it to the Work Avoidance List as soon as we can actually verify the link.
