CompuServe it was, yes. I joined it in '79 and stayed with it until '93 or '94, by which time Internet connections where widely available and it didn't seem necessary any more.
My first real computer (not counting Benjy) was a Radio Shack Model 100, a little notebook-sized device that came off the shelf with 16 kilobytes of RAM and ran on flashlight batteries.

My first computer was the Tandy 2000, I believe, circa 1985. And, I financed it. I used it to chat with you using - CompuServe, was it?
