Not for the weak of heart

Neptune's Inferno: The U.S. Navy at Guadalcanal by James D. Hornfischer, an exhaustively researched, brutally detailed, and grippingly narrated account of the epic naval struggle off the island of Guadalcanal in 1942, is the latest addition to our reading list. Hornfischer also wrote The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors, which appeared on the list a year or so ago. Inferno is a terrific book, but one that requires a serious investment of time and effort. For readers of WWII history, it's a must.
