Indeed, every teacher, young and old, is — or should be — a fuddy-duddy. One of a teacher's prime functions is to draw firm distinctions, to forcefully insist:

  • Seinfeld isn't Shakespeare.
  • Astrology isn't astronomy.
  • A romance novel isn't "Pride and Prejudice."
  • Jerry Lewis isn't Aristophanes.

 

 

 

If that sounds elitist, I plead guilty — on behalf of the entire educational enterprise.
