…yes, America was great—in at least one time and at least one place, and that place was North Platte, Nebraska. The story of it is in a book by Bob Greene called Once Upon a Town, now on our work avoidance reading list.
About eight years after the end of WWII I was on a train full of Boy Scouts headed from Chicago to Santa Anna, CA, and the train made a stop in North Platte and the folks there reenacted their North Platte Canteen for us. I still remember it, even though at the time I had no idea what a big deal that really was. This book tells the story.
